Tuesday Newsday – October 23rd

I don’t even know where to begin with this Tuesday Newsday. I’ve had a high level of stress this past week and I’m unsure of how to deal with it…all I know is something needs to change in my life.

Let’s start with what I do know: Running, with a little bit of the week’s events mixed in.

Training Week 9:

Monday: rest day. It was a rest day for my legs (including laser treatment), but not for my mind. I was offered a new job. I’m really not that flakey of a person I swear! I know, though, I’ve only been at my current job for about 3 months; not good evidence to my non-flakey-ness. But, I don’t get quite full time at this place, and even though I like learning about the holistic approach to veterinary medicine, sometimes I have to put my bills on priority. There was also a lot of negative energy from the other technician and doctor – basically I did 99% of the work and never got recognized or even credited for it. Kinda disheartening…anyway….new job offer on the table….

Tuesday: (4 miles): Job offer accepted. Full time and back to be a lead technician! I was excited to get the opportunity to be a lead tech in a new clinic where I can help develop the way things run and put protocols in place. I did however accept the position with the idea in mind that I will be going back to school next year sometime and it WONT be in this state. Running: 4 miles.

Wednesday (7 miles): I worked a 12 hour shift at the new clinic and needless to say, I had no desire to run 7 miles when I got off – especially in the dark – a little scared of being attacked. I did sit in a coffee shop once I got off, eating a bagel, studying for the GRE, wondering how fat I would be if I didn’t run while sipping a pumpkin spice latte…

Thursday (4 miles): I ran my 7 miles this day, once I got off work. I also put in my two-ish weeks at my current clinic. Ironically, they fired the Doctor that I absolutely loved for false accusations; so I felt no guilt putting in my two weeks. Shockingly, my office manager acted sad that I was leaving and offered me the potential to work a little bit with the idea that maybe, eventually, they could steal me back. I told her maybe. Oh yeah, I changed my hair this day too! Check it:

Friday: (rest-ish day – I intended to do the 4 miles from the previous day, but it was a busy day) I ended up working all day (my schedule kept getting messed this week – another reason I decided to quit – unstable hours; not enough and never the set in stone. Oh and did I mention? The OWNER of my clinic barely said a word to me and didn’t even acknowledge that I put my two weeks in). Anyway, I got off work late, rushed to the bank before it closed, rushed home to get ready and headed out for all you can eat sushi! (Saki bombs on the house!).

Saturday: In attempt to make up my lost miles, I did my 4 mile run around my normal lake. This was the most beautiful run I’ve been on in a long time! I chose the perfect time to set my feet to the pavement.

Sunday: (half) This means I’m halfway through training! YIKES! But exciting! I did not do a 13.1 mile run though. Opps. Ok, hear me out. I did NOT feel well at all. I slept most of the day, my whole body feeling horrible. (BOYS DONT READ THIS PART: but most likely due to being that time of the month…the body just doesn’t work the same…at least mine doesn’t. See what women runners have to deal with!?!?!) Anyway, I felt shitty all over. I did get invited to do another sunset run with my guy friend Shay, and attempted a 3-ish mile trail run loop in Golden up to the top of the mesa. I attempted it, walking a lot of it…I seriously couldn’t do it. He charged up it, with both of our dogs. My dog kept running back to me looking at me like, “geez, slow much?” I caught up at the top and we sat and watched the sunset. Once over the hills, I ran/slid down the mountain and we met up with my gal friend Shay for beers and sushi (yes, sushi again!).

I decided to listen to the advice that a running coach gave me once day while waiting for jury duty: Know when to rest. Your body will tell you. So, I guess I’m glad I didn’t run much sunday. Monday I did wake up sick, literally, and told myself that I really need to rest. I even threw up at work and they STILL made me work. So much for resting!

Other than work related stress, there’s always the usual friendship/relationship woes…I try not to put too much in my blog about this stuff because it’s pretty personal; lets just say it’s adding to my stress and I haven’t decided what I want to do about it yet! LOL

Plans for this week: Get back to my running schedule, and figure out how to arrange it with my new schedule. I WILL run hard this week, I promise! Also, STUDY all week long! Next week I take the GRE! It’s on halloween…couldn’t think of anything scarier than taking a test that pretty much decides my future!

Tuesday Newsday – 9/25

Well, I think I’ve experienced my first running injury. Given, it wasn’t too bad, and the pain only acts up occasionally, but after my long run last week, I had a horrible pain in my right knee. Although, I still can’t quite figure it out. I thought it was an IT band injury, but after reading about IT bands and such on line, it wasn’t in the right place.

My pain was in the tendon/ligament behind my knee. You know, when you bend your need and that hard-ish thing that sticks out; the one on the outside of the back of the knee. That’s what hurt. I think it’s the “hamstring tendon” after looking at pictures, but I have no idea what I’m talking about when it comes to human anatomy….anyone that knows a thing or two about this stuff, please feel free to tell me.

Well, it hurt every time I bent my knee; not just bending, but the action of pulling up my calve hurt. So here’s how training went:

Monday: (rest day) The day after my long run, I started noticing the pain while walking around at work, but I was meeting a friend at the gym that night to teach him some swimming strokes (after all I used to teach swimming lessons back in the day), so I ran for only a mile on the treadmill to warm up. I probably shouldn’t have, because it hurt after, and I ended the night with a soak in the hot tub.

Tuesday: (3 miles) I ran 4 miles, around my normal lake route. Afterwards I went to abs class and climbing like normal, but this is when I really felt the pain. I made sure to stretch a lot while waiting to climb, starting to think that maybe it was a stretching issue.

Swinging!!! Weeee!!! (Don’t look at my horribly old, worn out shoes…I desperately need a new pair, but no money : (

Wednesday: (6 miles) 1.2 miles complete! HAHA! I started out for a run and the pain was just too awful, I made it 1.2 miles from my house, right about where a playground is. So, depressed that I couldn’t run, I swung on the swings. The playground was deserted of any children (phew) so I had the swings all to myself, but when the pumping of my legs even hurt my knee, I depressingly walked home.

Thursday: (3 miles) 3 miles complete. Actually, I was on the mend…but here’s why: I work a veterinary clinic, and a new form of treatment that vets are now using is Laser therapy. I kinda want to do a whole post on this, so stayed tuned. Here’s the gist of it: The Laser is used to treat soft tissue wounds, arthritis and can be used on incision sites (after surgery) to aid the healing process. I’ve been skeptical, not really seeing results even though the doc and owners swear by it. So, why not try it on myself!? I Laser-ed (is this the correct grammar??) my injury site and because I have chronic arthritis-like pain in my knees in general, I Laser-ed both of my entire knees – front and back. Not joking: my run was pain free. I’m going to regularly laser my knees. But still, not knowing what the pain was or what I should do, I made sure to stretch really well before and after I ran.

Friday: (rest day) Time to regain my lost 6 miles! I did a 6 mile run from Wednesday on the trails for the #runchat trail run challenge.

Saturday/Sunday: (12 miles) 😦 none. Well, I’ve having better luck doing my long runs on Sunday. This saturday, I played paintball for the first time in my life for the boy’s bday. Um, not gonna lie, probably wont paintball ever again. I am glad I tried it, but it’s not for me. For one, it fucking hurts. I have 3 huge welts/bruises, even though I got shot more times than that. For another, I’m just not good at war-like games or scenarios. Even with video games; I’d rather play guitar hero than modern warfare 2 or whatever. But seriously, paintball – not for me. I pretty sure I shot my own teammate at one point (But hear me out, he was in this v-shaped crevasse thing and I couldn’t tell who he was because of the masks from far away or which direction he was facing because of the area he was hiding) and I also spaz out and have a habit of freaking out when I see someone and then going to hide while blind shooting my gun (which actually is in the rules to not do). So, paintball not for me. And I left a little disappointment that I might not be as good in a zombie apocalypse as I thought….but zombies don’t shoot back……so I should be fine…right????

Anyway, Sunday I was going to run 9 miles (Because next week I’m going to run a half marathon, so I flip flopped long runs anyway with next weeks) but I was enjoying lounging in bed at the boy’s house and by the time I had planned to run after a nap, I woke up with horrible girly stomach issues. So, I went home and rested, feeling like shit.

Other news???

Not too much going on, South Dakota is this weekend – I’m super excited and my Mommy is going with! YAY!

Tuesday Newsday – 8/7

Holy crap! It’s a week into August!?! GEEZ!

This Tuesday Newsday is brought to you today by a random thing I think about while writing about running:

NO FREAKING WAY!?! I WANT ONE!!!!!!

– I’ve been typing the word marathon A LOT. Is it weird that every time I type it, my fingers want to keep on typing and add a G at the end…yes, I type marathong on a regular basis – so regularly that I’m instinctually started back spacing after typing the word because I know I’ll have to delete the last letter. Is there such a thing as a Freudian Typo??

Anyway, my news for this week:

1) As you know, last weekend I participated in the Wild West Relay. It was a blast! I had a lot of fun! I met some great new people, and got a lot of running in. Definitely a new experience. I’m working on getting a full post put together. Click here for a quickie review and some pictures from the event.

2) My lifting is still going; I’ve been doing weight training about two times a week, with a third day being something that isn’t strictly weights, but still makes me work my muscles. Like, today, I join my friend Shay for abs class and indoor climbing. Last week, both definitely made me sore…so sore, sneezing hurts!

Now THAT’s what I call a marathong!

3) Stretching is still the same, I’m working on putting together my stretching routine for you all, whether you want to see it or not, because I think it will force me to focus on stretching more.

4) After the relay race, my racing schedule is kinda slow right now. I think the next race I have planned is mid September, but knowing me, I’ll probably sign up for something random. BUT marathong, I mean MARATHON training starts NEXT weekend!!! So once that kicks into gear, Tuesday Newsdays will be WAY more exciting!
